Tutorials > Atlantis Project

Ok, if you've been around this site for anytime, you probably know that I am a history major so anything that has to do with the ancient world always catches my eye. This time around, I was inspired by the legend of Atlantis. There's actually three parts to this tutorial. The first part deals with creating the stone, the second part the "Atlantis" text, and lastly the "The Lost Continent" text which is an engraved effect.

Creating The Stone

1. Create a new Fireworks document 600 X 350 with a Black Canvas.

2. Draw out a rectangle the size of the stone and use the following fill settings and Live Effects:

Fill with the Pattern > Blue Green. Add the Burlap Texture at 28%.

3. Change the Hue/Saturation to below.

4. Add an Inner Glow Effect with the settings shown below.

5. Now, use the Unsharp Mask Effect and again use the settings in the screenshot below.

This is the first rectangle...

Ok, we're going to make a second rectangle and add some different effects to it and blend it into the first one.

6. Copy and paste the rectangle, remove the Unsharp Mask effect and change the Pattern to Pastels. Make sure this layer is on top of the first one. Change the layer Blend Mode to Multiply.

Curves

Add Gaussian Blur

Select the Fill Bucket Tool and pull on the handles like below. This give a rippled or lumpy effect - great for our stone!

And that's it for the stone!

Second Part

The "Atlantis" Text

Ok, this text doesn't look too ancient but Atlantis was supposed to be technologically advanced so we wouldn't want to make a dull "archaic" looking text style.

So, here we go.

The text properties for "Atlantis". White - Blue (#0066FF) Linear Gradient. Black 1-Pixel (Pencil) Soft Stroke - Outside Path.

Inner Glow (#00FFFF)

Drop Shadow

Fill Direction (Note that I left a little of the white gradient on the bottom of the text.)

Third Part

Here are the specifics of the "The Lost Continent" text. The effect is an Inner Glow. (#4C511D)
