Tutorials > Type on a Path in Illustrator

Typing on a path in Illustrator is a simple procedure. The first thing to do is to draw out the path that the text will be attached to. You can use the Pencil Tool or the Pen Tool to create the path. The color and stroke size doesn't matter since it will become invisible once the text is attached to it.

Once you have the path drawn, deselect it and click on the Type Tool. Position the cursor over the path and click it with your mouse. It should turn into a blue line with a blinking cursor. This tells you that whatever you type will follow the path.

The Paragraph and Character settings can still be changed. The text can be centered or aligned to the right or left.

You may need to adjust the Tracking or Kerning of the letters to space them apart.  This is done in the Character Panel.
