Tutorials > Comix Text Effect

It's been a while since I've created some new text effects with Fireworks. Since Fireworks 8 is out I thought it would be a good idea to use the new Solid Shadow Filter to create a fun 3D-ish effect!

1. Like I've said in other tutorials, the font style that you choose will make or break the effect. For this particular style, you'll want to choose a bold "fat" font that has some character. I'm using a font called Baby Kruffy - where I got it, I don't know but it works great for   this style. If you would like to use this font go to:

Ok, now that has been said and done let's get busy!

2.  Type out the text that you want to use the effect on. Increase the Kerning to 8 (the space between the letters) and increase the Horizontal Scale to 105%. Also make sure that you use Smooth Anti-Alias for your Anti-Alias Level.

You can take a look at the rest of the settings below.

3. Add a 1-Pixel Soft (Pencil) Black Stroke to the text. Make sure you choose Outside Path and check Fill over stroke.

4. Now it's just a matter of using a few Filter effects on the text to get the right look.

First,  add an Inner Shadow with the settings below:

Add another Inner Shadow with the following settings:

If you are using Fireworks 8, you'll be able to take advantage of its new filter - the Solid Shadow. You can find it under Shadow and Glow.

And last but not least we'll add a Glow to enhance the effect.
