Tutorials > Creating Leather in Illustrator

Here's a simple way to create a leather looking graphic in Illustrator CS2.

1.  Create a new RGB document, whatever size you like.

2.  Use the Rectangle Tool to draw out a rectangle, again the size is up to you.

3.  Fill the Rectangle with Mars Red.

4.  Give the Rectangle a Black Dashed Stroke.  See the settings below:

5.  Now go to Effect > Texture > Grain.

6.  Apply a second Effect > Brush Strokes > Crosshatch

7.  Now just add a simple Drop Shadow with the settings shown below.

8.  Ok, that does it for the "leather" object itself.  Next we'll create the text.  This is just a simple inset effect that makes the lettering appear to be sunken (or stamped) into the leather.

Type out "Leather" or whatever you want...

Here are the text settings:  Myriad, Roman, Black, Size 74.9.

9.  The final step is to add an Inner Glow Effect to the text.  This is what makes the text look "sunken".

And that does it!
